In addition to ALBA synchrotron, the other large scientific facility in Barcelona is BSC-CNS (Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación), the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain officially constituted in April 2005. BSC-CNS manages MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, located… in a chapel.
The mission of BSC-CNS is to investigate, develop and manage information technology in order to facilitate scientific progress. With this aim, special dedication has been taken to areas such as Computer Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Computational Applications in Science and Engineering.
BSC-CNS director, Prof. Valero, was selected on September 23 as the first European recipient for the Seymour Cray Computer Engineering award, one of the IEEE Computer Society’s highest awards, a recognition of innovative contributions to high-performance computing systems that best exemplify the creative spirit demonstrated by Seymour Cray.
Congratulations, Mr Valero!
IEEE Computer Society is the world’s leading membership organization for professionals in all aspects of modern computing—from cloud to big data, security to mobile, robotics to software defined systems, wearables to IoT.
