SENER awarded its first contract with Embraer
The engineering and technology group SENER has been awarded its first aeronautics contract in Brazil, where it has had offices since 2010, and where it currently employs over 300 Brazilian engineers and technicians.

The agreement signed with Embraer expects the supply of a handling system for assembling large mobile parts for the KC390 military aircraft program.

The automated system that makes it possible to assemble parts with high quality, repeatability and tight tolerance in both its manufacturing and its maintenance processes, is designed and produced by SENER in its new corporate building located in the Barcelona Synchrotron Park.

From brick to neuron
The secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has emphasized that the idea of moving from “brick to neuron” may seem a cliché but it corresponds to a reality Spain is carrying out to get out of “the pernicious effects of the crisis”.

Mexican José Ángel Gurría made this statement last September 8 ahead of the presentation in Madrid of the OECD’s latest two-yearly report on Spain.

The international organisation improved its forecasts for Spain and predicts a 1.2% GDP growth for 2014 and a 1.6% growth for 2015 but it also warned that the pace of reform should be kept up because of the still fragile situation due to the high public debt level and unemployment rate.

Moving from brick to neuron, moving from an economy over-dependent on the building sector to an economy based on the added value of R&D and innovation, is the mission of the Barcelona Synchrotron Park that offers worldwide innovative companies an interesting ecosystem for developing new products and opening up new markets.

The UAB University is strengthening its position in the Shanghai ranking
For the second year in a row, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) that the Barcelona Synchrotron Park works with, ranks in the 200-300 range of the best universities in the world according to the 2014 ranking annually drawn up by the Shanghai University.

The Autonomous University of Madrid and the University of Valence also belong to the same range whereas the University of Barcelona is among the top 200 universities. Eight other Spanish universities are in the 300-500 range.

In this ranking, the UAB University especially stands out in mathematics, life sciences, medicine, social sciences, chemistry, economics or computing.

Ascamm develops a drone for rescues
A team led by Ascamm, the technology center located in the Parc Tecnològic del Vallès with whom the Barcelona Synchrotron Park collaborates, has developed a drone specifically dedicated to rescues that was tested in the past few weeks.

This drone was designed in the framework of the EU Icarus project that aims at developing technologies that enable the use of unmanned vehicles in research and rescue operations.

The Ascamm drone is a quadrotor, a type of small 4.5 kg helicopter with 30-minute autonomy that records thermal images for designing appropriate real-time rescue strategies.

SENER and ESA reach an agreement for the prime contractor role on the Proba 3 mission
Last July, the engineering and technology group SENER whose headquarters in Catalonia are located in the Barcelona Synchrotron Park, signed an agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) for the prime contractor role on different phases of the Proba-3 space mission.

Proba-3’s objective is the in-orbit demonstration of high-precision formation flying technology. Formation flying consists of two or more satellites orbiting in coordination, maintaining very precise relative distances and orientations. This allows, for example, producing a space telescope, whose essential features (lens and detectors) installed in different satellites separated hundreds of meters, whilst maintaining their stable relative position.

SENER's responsibility in this program follows many other reference projects such as the Gaia mission, the rover Curiosity, the Rosetta probe and the satellites Seosat / INGENIO, Herschel and Planck, BepiColombo, Solar Orbiter and Meteosat Third Generation, among others.

SENER’s success in these programs confirms the company’s leading position as a supplier of engineering and manufacturing services for the space industry in the area of precision mechanisms, optical payloads and guidance, navigation and control systems.

The Catalan Institute for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology receives the Severo Ochoa accreditation
On last July 15, the Catalan Institute for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) located in the campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) that the Barcelona Synchrotron Park works with, received the Severo Ochoa accreditation (2013 tender) from the State Secretary for Research, with four other Spanish research institutes.

With the purpose of rewarding excellence, the Severo Ochoa state program initiated in 2011 aims at giving a financial support to the best Spanish research centers (€ 1 million per year during 4 years) and provides them with privileged conditions for accessing large research facilities, recruiting personal or having access to sponsors.

With 170 researchers, ICN2 is devoted to studying and understanding fundamental physical phenomena associated to electrons, photons, phonons or plasmons, investigating new properties derived from tailored nanostructures and establishing new process for the design and fabrication of new nanodevices.
