Natura Bissé in the Barcelona Synchrotron Park
Natura Bissé cosmetics company will build its new head office in the Barcelona Synchrotron Park (BSP).

The multinational will also set up on the 5,700 square metres plot acquired its world research, production and commercialization center.

The firm specialized in very high value-added cosmetics as a result of its commitment with research and innovation, is present on 35 countries markets and has branches in the United States, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates and Great Britain.

The choice made by Natura Bissé, which bases its strategy on innovation, to settle in BSP is great news for the park. This new arrival reinforces the mission of this public business park to strengthen the Catalan industrial sector through the attraction of innovative companies.

Two Research Centers Awarded at the UAB University
Two of the three Spanish research centers selected this year to receive the Severo Ochoa accreditation are located at the UAB University, the Barcelona Synchrotron Park (BSP) partner: the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) with which BSP has an agreement in order to offer its companies a privileged access to the institute facilities, and the Center for Research in Agriculture Genomics (CRAG).

Severo Ochoa accreditations from the State Secretariat for Science are awarded annually since 2011 to the best Spanish research centers in all fields of knowledge. An accredited center receives one million Euros per year during four years.

With this year’s results published last week, a total of 23 centers have been awarded so far. It can be stressed that 10 of these 23 centers are in Barcelona and 4 of these 10 are at the UAB campus: in addition to ICMAB and CRAG awarded this year, the High Energy Physics Institute (IFAE) and the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) have to be mentioned.

Congratulations!

How ideas grow, the new Barcelona Synchrotron Park video
Barcelona Synchrotron Park (BSP) urges you to visit its updated web site and to discover its new video.

In addition to its high level infrastructures (district heating and cooling, six telecom operators with their own networks, Data Centers, etc.), the main asset BSP can offer to worldwide technology-based companies that want to settle in southern Europe is its environment conducive to innovation.

We obviously find there the ALBA synchrotron, the largest scientific facility in south-western Europe; the UAB university, the top Spanish university and number 146 worldwide according to the last THE ranking, with 4,000 researchers in 30 research centers, with the PRUAB technology transfer and incubation center; the EURECAT-ASCAMM technology center; the ESADE business school and its ESADECreapolis business and incubator center… and a dense industrial network of more than 10,000 companies within a 5km radius around the synchrotron.

The video aims at depicting this environment. By the way, would you recognize what famous athlete appears in it?!

Good News for Two PRUAB Spin-Offs
PRUAB is a key structure in the Barcelona Synchrotron Park environment: this foundation aims at transferring technologies, transforming results obtained in the 30 UAB University research centers (4,000 researchers) into new products, patents, spin-offs or stat-ups and offering local companies innovative solutions based on these scientific results.

Ypsicon is one of these spin-offs created in 2011, based on the development of the so-called UHPH technology that offers a continuous system and procedure of sterilization and physical stabilization of pumpable fluids by means of ultra-high pressure homogenization. This technology allows the preservation of beverages, liquid foodstuffs and pumpable fluids for long periods of time without refrigeration, and reducing the need for additives and preservatives. Last month, the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted Ypsicon's UHPH patent. With this approval, Ypsicon obtains the exclusive control of this technology in the world's largest economy after those already obtained in China, Japan, Australia and Europe.

Oxolutia is another example of PRUAB spin-offs created in 2010 with the initial mission to develop technologies based on chemical solution deposition for continuous production of second-generation high temperature superconductor tapes. The new Solar Oxides project offers flexible photovoltaic solar cells that can be manufactured by 3D printing. Using conductive oxides, a non-toxic, stable, and low-cost material found abundantly in nature, the cells open up exciting new opportunities for generating low-cost solar energy. This project was recently selected by the Repsol foundation to join its portfolio of entrepreneurs. This foundation backed by the multinational energy company acts as an incubator to give support to projects that provide innovative solutions in the field of energy.

BSC-CNS Director, Prof. Valero, Recipient of the Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award
In addition to ALBA synchrotron, the other large scientific facility in Barcelona is BSC-CNS (Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación), the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain officially constituted in April 2005. BSC-CNS manages MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, located… in a chapel.

The mission of BSC-CNS is to investigate, develop and manage information technology in order to facilitate scientific progress. With this aim, special dedication has been taken to areas such as Computer Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Computational Applications in Science and Engineering.

BSC-CNS director, Prof. Valero, was selected on September 23 as the first European recipient for the Seymour Cray Computer Engineering award, one of the IEEE Computer Society’s highest awards, a recognition of innovative contributions to high-performance computing systems that best exemplify the creative spirit demonstrated by Seymour Cray.

Congratulations, Mr Valero!

IEEE Computer Society is the world’s leading membership organization for professionals in all aspects of modern computing—from cloud to big data, security to mobile, robotics to software defined systems, wearables to IoT.
