Spanish Duathlon Championships: Not Only Electrons Run Around the Barcelona Synchrotron Park
2016 Spanish Duathlon Championships (running leg + cycling +leg + running leg), which will be held in the city of Cerdanyola on April 2 and 3, were officially presented in the City Hall on last December 28 (video in Spanish). 1,500 athletes from 9 categories will run on Cerdanyola streets and cycle on the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus and the Barcelona Synchrotron Park (BSP) that is the main sponsor of this competition.

In ALBA synchrotron, accelerated electrons run around the building at the speed of light completing about 1 million laps per second. Champions that will come to compete from all over Spain certainly will take longer to complete the cycling lap designed around the synchrotron but they will do it with the same will to improve that innovative companies settled in BSP have.

With 17km of cycling tracks and many paths to walk and run in the middle of 200 hectares of green areas, BSP also offers people a pleasant setting to carry on a physical activity. By welcoming these championships, BSP also wants to make this popular space known and share it with high performance athletes.

Catalonia, Top Continental Europe Region in R&D Foreign Investments Attraction
According to FDI Markets, Catalonia is since 2010 the top Continental Europe region in R&D foreign investments attraction (the third one after Ireland and South East in United Kingdom) explained the Acting Catalan Minister of Economy and Employment in a presentation given on December 11.

These data indicate that along the 2010-August 2015 period, 66 R&D foreign investments projects had been registered in Catalonia, representing a global amount of 1.07 billion euros and the creation of 6,000 jobs.

Based on FDI Markets sources, companies that have invested the most in Catalonia are Germany, the United States, Great Britain, France and Japan, in that order. The reasons why they have chosen this region are the highly-qualified workforce, the innovation and technology ecosystem, research centers and universities and the importance of the industrial sector. Pharmaceutical, ICT, plastics and additives sectors are the most important ones in these investments.

4th PRUAB Generating Ideas Programme: and the Winners are…
The fourth edition of the Generating Ideas Programme, which is organized by the UAB Research Park, a Barcelona Synchrotron Park partner, now has its winners. The three winning projects were chosen for their potential applications in the aerospace sector.

The programme seeks to foster entrepreneurial spirit and a culture of innovation, and to help UAB researchers and PhD students from all branches of science transform their ideas into marketable products.

The programme started in October: over eight weeks participants had been working in multidisciplinary teams to develop their ideas and make an initial business plan. During the second phase, the participants were given training in key aspects such as intellectual property and valorization of the business model, funding and presentation techniques. Lastly, on December 3 the finalists presented their projects to a panel of valorization experts who chose the three winners.

Top prize went to the 2D EDGE project that has developed a continuous production platform for high-quality graphene. The OISensing project took second prize. This project has developed a new material named BL (Bi-Layer) Film, which is completely organic and sensitive to infra-red radiation. Third prize awarded the Smart Coding Tech project that offers an innovative solution for rapid data transmission and efficient storage.

Congratulations!

SENER Technologies in the News
The SENER engineering and technology group with Catalan headquarters in the Barcelona Synchrotron  Park (BSP) is in the news this week.

Gemasolar designed by SENER is the most innovative thermo solar power plant in the world. It represents Spain in the “United for Climate” European Union campaign for the COP21 conference currently held in Paris until December 11, as announced by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment. This plant was the first commercial one to generate non-stop electricity exclusively with solar energy using molten salt as heat transfer fluid and energy storage medium: Gemasolar can feed the grid on demand, generally a weakness for renewable energies.

Moreover, in collaboration with the Institute of Space Sciences located on the campus of the UAB University BSP partner, SENER has been in charge of the design, development, production, integration and verification of the Data and Diagnostic Subsystem of the LISA Pathfinder satellite, a European Space Agency technologies demonstrator made in collaboration with NASA and successfully launched from Kourou, French Guiana, on December 3. This mission aims at testing elements of the future LISA gravitational waves observatory that will “hear” the universe in order to detect these waves and confirm part of the general relativity theory presented by Einstein one century ago, exactly on Novembre 25, 1915.

Barcelona Attractiveness Confirmed by Two International Rankings
Mainly due to its environment attractiveness, Barcelona ranks 6th as best worldwide city reputation behind Sidney, Melbourne, Stockholm, Vienna and Vancouver according to the last City RepTrack 2015 ranking released last month by the Reputation Institute.

In order to perform this 99 cities ranking, 13 different parameters grouped into 3 dimensions (administration efficiency, degree of advanced economy and environment attractiveness) were analyzed. The reason why Barcelona ranks among the Top 10 cities depends largely on the very good result (rank #3) obtained for the third criterion.

Beside, the capital of Catalonia ranks 4th behind New York, London and Helsinki according to the 2015 CITIE (City Initiatives for Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship) ranking.

In this study carried out on 40 worldwide different cities, CITIE analyzed three parameters (three criteria per parameter): openness, infrastructure and leadership. Barcelona ranks in the group of the so-called Front Runners thanks to its commitment with innovation and entrepreneurship.

Barcelona Synchrotron Park generally explains that the most important asset offered to its companies is its innovation-conducive environment. These two rankings confirm the quality of it.
