Barcelona Synchrotron Park’s Commitment to Nature and Biodiversity
The Espai Terra Catalan public TV program dedicated to nature and environment aired on April 28th was partly shot in Parc de l’Alba and its so-called Barcelona Synchrotron Park business area
The purpose was to present the ALBA synchrotron garden and green roof as well as the park new pathways about to be open in order to make the park’s action program known regarding conservation of biodiversity.
In the program excerpt that can be watched here (in Catalan), the synchrotron garden’s designer explains how the garden has been planned to require low maintenance, low water consumption, no phytosanitary treatment and to be wildlife friendly to foxes, rabbits or partridges, including a falcon couple that has taken up residence in the ALBA roof. Besides, part of this roof is green in order to integrate it in the environment, thermally insulate the building and help biodiversity.
By the way, supporting biodiversity is one of the missions of the park: the corresponding park’s action program that can be downloaded here received last November the Business & Biodiversity label from the European Commission.
The video also allows learning about these actions: Permeability of road infrastructures, creation of shelters to promote birds and other fauna to control pests, naturalised drainage systems (green ditches) or agreements with farmers to promote biodiversity-suited dry croplands in the green corridor and on undeveloped plots.

Reference research centres in the environment of the Barcelona Synchrotron Park
The recently updated Nature Index, which tracks the researcher affiliations collected from worldwide high quality scientific articles, provides a good opportunity to speak about three important research centres installed on the campus of the UAB university, the Barcelona Synchrotron Park‘s partner: ICMAB, ICN2 and IFAE.
The Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) has been recognized with many successes during these last years, including 9 ERC Projects awarded to its researchers. In the latest Nature Index, ICMAB is ranked in the top 4 research centres in Catalonia and Spain, only behind three other Catalan centres: the ICIQ (Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia), the ICFO (Institute of Photonic Sciences) and the ICN2 (Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology) also set up on the UAB campus.
The Institute for High Energy Physics (IFAE) also settled on the UAB campus, has been recently in the news: among the research team that published last month intriguing anomalies in the way some particles decay, 2 of the 5 researchers that analysed data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC, CERN) and other experiments, are from the IFAE. If confirmed, these results would be a sign of new physics phenomena not predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics.
Finally, let’s mention that both ICN2 and IFAE, jointly with ICFO, ICIQ, IRB (Institute for Research in Biomedicine) and CRG (Centre for Genomic Regulation) form the new Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) that aims to construct a scientific project based on the search for the complementary and interdisciplinary of fields, not only to promote the creation of innovative projects, but also to provide the most competitive environment for the training of scientists. According to Nature Index, BIST with its 1,400 researchers ranks 24 in Europe.

SMEs discover the potential of the Barcelona Synchrotron Park
The 20-person delegation representing different SMEs from the cities of Granollers and Montmeló that visited this week the ALBA synchrotron could see how this singular facility does not only serve the international scientific community: this electron accelerator that produces radiations used to observe the inner structure of materials is an infrastructure also useful and accessible to companies.
Actually, the ALBA industrial liaison office aims precisely at making companies know and use the wide range of unique material characterization tools ALBA offers to improve industrial processes and develop new products in very different sectors such as food, health, energy or nanotechnology.
The delegation also had the opportunity to discover the polygeneration power plant (photo): in order to reduce the environmental impact of its urban development, the Barcelona Synchrotron Park has designed and built a centralized heating and cooling system based on high efficiency polygeneration technologies that allow the simultaneous production of electricity (for ALBA) and heating and cooling distributed throughout the park. This approach helps reduce primary consumption and CO2 emission by 35% compared to conventional air-conditioning systems installed in each company.
This outsourced service allows companies to concentrate on their business, reduce their initial investment and the physical space to allocate to bulky equipment, reduce of some 20% the associated operating and maintenance costs and give flexibility if energy requirements change.

The BSP is candidate to host the European Medicines Agency
The BSP is candidate to host the European Medicines Agency
Due to the Brexit, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) currently settled in London will have to be transferred in a new town of the EU-27.
Barcelona, with the support of the Spanish government, is candidate to host the agency and the Barcelona Synchrotron Park (BSP) presents its offer to build the EMA’s headquarters in the park.
This candidature presented during the Àmbit B30 association board on April 6 2017 is the candidature of a whole region, the Vallès, in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.
The candidature file can be downloaded in Spanish or Catalan.

The meeting organized this month at ALBA synchrotron with representatives from the Industrial Liaison Offices of different European synchrotrons offers an opportunity to remind that a synchrotron does not only serve the international scientific community but also companies, both large ones and SMEs, allowing them to stimulate their innovation and so their competitiveness.
The ALBA industrial liaison office, under Alejandro Sánchez’s responsibility, aims precisely at making corporate world know the wide range of unique material characterization tools ALBA offers to improve industrial processes and develop new products in very different sectors such as food, health, energy or nanotechnology.
As a one-stop shop, the industrial liaison office provides advice and services to the industrial community during their time at the ALBA Synchrotron and helps in knowledge transfer activities.
