The Sixth Ideas Generation Program Sponsored by the Barcelona Synchrotron Park Has Begun
The Ideas Generation Program organized by PRUAB, the UAB University research park, is an original initiative supported by Barcelona Synchrotron Park that sponsors the top prize: every year, it aims at offering companies the benefit of the UAB researchers’ wealth of creativity to get proposals to their technological challenges.

The 2017 Ideas Generation Program began on last October 6 and is focussed this year on challenges in the biotechnology and biomedicine sectors. It involves 40 researchers from different research centers of the UAB campus that will carry out 10 innovative projects.

For this reason, the 2017 program is jointly organized by the Catalan Biotechnology Network (XRB), sponsored by Roche Diagnostics, Air Liquide and the City Council of Sant Cugat, in addition to the Barcelona Synchrotron Park and counts on the collaboration of Biocat, CataloniaBio, TrifermedCBDO and ReigJofre. These partners have presented different technological challenges to the researchers such as new proteins elaborations, low cost sterilization processes, biotechnology 3D printing methods, among others.

During 8 weeks, participants will work on the development of their idea and on a first business plan that will be presented in a competition before a panel of experts in valorisation of business ideas.

Good luck to all participants!

Barcelona Synchrotron Park's commitment to Biodiversity
Last week in Frankfurt, Germany, the Barcelona Synchrotron Park (BSP) attended the 4th annual meeting of the European Union Business@Biodiversity platform.

This platform aims at encouraging all initiatives from both private and public sectors that evidence the compatibility of creating economic growth and protecting biodiversity.

For one year, BSP is a full member of the B@B platform thanks to its continuous actions to support biology diversity and green infrastructure in its protected green areas and in the pending building plots. The corresponding BSP’s action plan can be downloaded here.

“How can businesses set an ambition level when integrating biodiversity into their activities?” was the key question of the meeting BSP’s biologist Consol Pérez in charge of the action plan attended. Feel free to contact with her to know more about BSP’s commitment to biodiversity.

8 Congresses at the same time: it’s the Barcelona Industry Week!
Technology, innovation, science and sustainability are the key factors for understanding the transformation of industry at a global level. This transformation affects every sector and has a direct impact on our lives: the 4th Industrial Revolution.

At Fira de Barcelona room is given to all these sectors over this week during which eight major events are taking place at the same time: ExpoquimiaSmart Chemistry Smart FutureEquiplast, IOT Solutions World Congress10th World Congress of Chemical EngineeringIn3DustryWorld Chemical Summit and Eurosurfas with the aim of providing an overall vision of everything that is yet to come.

ALBA synchrotron will be present: in Expoquimia, an overview of ALBA and the main applications of its laboratories (the so-called beamlines) that use the special light produced by the electron accelerator will be presented with emphasis on the studies which are more relevant for the chemical industrial sector.
It will be explained how industries can access to ALBA and all the scientific and technology support ALBA can provide. Funding for SMEs from the European Project CALISPOplus will also be presented.

Have nice congresses!

50th anniversary: congratulations UAB!
The UAB (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona), the Barcelona Synchrotron Park’s strategic partner, began its 50th anniversary celebrations with the inaugural ceremony held last week at the Monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès, the same place where the first opening lecture of the university was given in 1968. Former UNESCO director Federico Mayor Zaragoza defended the culture of peace in his conference entitled “The University at the front line for inventing the future”.

Let’s take advantage of this anniversary to point out some figures from the UAB’s 2016-2017 report: 46,749 students, 3,757 professors and researchers, 87 bachelor degrees, 133 master degrees, a € 313 million budget, 264 research groups, 1,072 PhD produced, among the world’s top 100 universities in 12 areas (QS ranking).

UAB offers teaching and research quality and the commitment to the society and the territory with technology transfer, among others:  UAB is definitely a key Barcelona Synchrotron Park’s asset for attracting companies in the park.

Congratulations!

How ALBA Synchrotron Works
This last summer, ALBA synchrotron uploaded a new informative video on its Youtube channel: “How does a Synchrotron work?” explains in one minute the key principles of a synchrotron.

On this channel, more than 30 different videos uploaded so far can be watched about ALBA’s actuality and the different kinds of experiments carried out in the fields of food, health, cultural heritage or environment.

More informative material is also available on the ALBA’s website: a sheet explains the differences and similarities between ALBA Synchrotron and LHC from CERN, a document details the different ways to use the synchrotron light, etc.

Popularize what ALBA does with its 200 people and the dozens of scientists and entrepreneurs welcomed every day to carry out the observation of the minute details of their materials is one of the missions of the Barcelona Synchrotron Park’s iconic scientific facility. If you want to know more about ALBA, one solution: come to the open day organised in spring. It is fascinating!
